Jason Kenny: "We can still mix it with the best"

Team England's Jason Kenny admits that it is nice to know he can still "mix it with the best" following his silver in the individual sprint at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England rider Jason Kenny has admitted that it is good to see that he can still "mix it with the best" following his silver medal at the Commonwealth Games today.

Kenny struggled through the qualifying event for the individual sprint yesterday, needing a repechage victory to reach the second day of action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

However, he beat the much-fancied Australian Matthew Glaetzer in the quarter-finals before seeing off another Aussie, Peter Lewis, to reach the gold-medal race.

New Zealand's Sam Webster proved too good in the final as he raced to the top prize, but Kenny was pleased with making a "big step forward" from the 2014 World Championships, when he was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

"It is a big step forward. Qualifying was still rubbish - I took the last qualifier so that's no good, we still need to sort that out," the three-time Olympic gold medalist told Sports Mole.

"But, up there racing against Glaetzen, who's one of the quickest in the world, it's nice to know we can still mix it with the best."

Kenny has now won two silver medals at the Glasgow Games having also finished second in the team sprint on Thursday.
