Team England rider Sir Bradley Wiggins admits that he is "disappointed" to have only managed a silver medal in the 4,000m team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games today.

Sir Bradley Wiggins has admitted that he was "disappointed" to have only managed a silver medal in the 4,000m team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games this afternoon.

Wiggins failed to add a Commonwealth gold to his glittering resume as Team England were comfortably beaten by Australia in the final, finishing more than five seconds behind their old rivals.

The 34-year-old did not hide his disappointment at having missed out on the top prize, but is hopeful that the silver medal can act as a springboard to the Rio Olympics in 2016.

"[I'm] disappointed, but in hindsight we'll look back and draw on this as a start point for the next two years," Wiggins told reporters.

"Rio is the goal and we've got to work for that. It takes four people to be on for gold and I think we had such different preparation for this. I don't want to sound like Roy Hodgson but we've definitely got some work to do.

"We were just all at different levels and the strategy was that, if I could do longer, then it would take the strain off us all. But as I say, the difference in preparation - that's what team pursuit is about."

Wiggins, who told Sports Mole after the race that Glasgow would be his last appearance at the Commonwealths, has now won four silver medals at the Games since 1998.
