Michael van Gerwen: 'Peter Wright lacked respect'

PDC world champion Michael van Gerwen admits that he was unhappy with Peter Wright's theatrics during their Premier League clash in Dublin on Thursday evening.

Michael van Gerwen has revealed that he was unimpressed with Peter Wright's showmanship during their Premier League encounter on Thursday evening.

In the fifth leg of the contest, Wright stopped momentarily to interact with the crowd before attempting to hit the bullseye to complete a 161 checkout, while in the next leg, he crouched down in an attempt to find a better angle to find the treble 20.

However, after he hit a 128 checkout in the final leg to secure a 7-5 win, Van Gerwen has admitted that Wright's actions had motivated him to end the Scot's unbeaten record in the competition.

The Dutchman is quoted by PDC.TV as saying: "He did a couple of things and I didn't like them. Peter's a good player anyway but I didn't think that he needed to do that, you should just play normal darts like Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis or Raymond van Barneveld.

"There are a lot of people that like it, but I don't and that's my opinion. He doesn't need to do that, and he knew that I didn't like it. I'm very glad that I hit the 128 at the end and won the game."

Van Gerwen beat Wright at Alexandra Palace in January to win his first world title.
