Lewis Ferguson ‘lost for words’ after semi-final winner against Rangers

Ferguson’s dad Derek played for Rangers.

Aberdeen hero Lewis Ferguson revealed his dad Derek was a converted Don for the day as he joined the Red Army to celebrate his Hampden winner.

The young Pittodrie midfielder was born nine years after his father left Rangers but his old man’s allegiances still lie at Ibrox.

However, he chose to cheer on the Reds on Sunday as his boy lined up for his first ever semi-final against his old side.

And he was given plenty to shout about as Ferguson junior grabbed the only goal to seal Aberdeen’s place in the Betfred Cup final.

It was a moment to saviour for the former Hamilton academy graduate and he was delighted his dad was there to share it with him.

The 19-year-old – whose uncle Barry also skippered Gers – said: “I’m lost for words – what an experience. That was my first game at Hampden, my first semi-final. It was a huge game for me personally so to get the winner, unbelievable.

“I had a wee feeling when Niall McGinn was lining up the corner that I could get on the end of it and thankfully I did.

“Connor Goldson is their big defender and I noticed that he wasn’t going to get on the end of it. I used my arms to get above Ovie Ejaria and got it on target.

“The feeling as I ran away to celebrate was mental. I’ve never really experienced anything like that. The fans’ arms were going everywhere. It was something I’ll always remember.

“My dad is a big Rangers man and that’s no secret but he will always support me because I’m his boy.

“But he was in the Aberdeen side and it was good to see him with a smile on his face.”

The Dons will return to Hampden on December 2 to face Celtic.

And Ferguson reckons his side can shock Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops if they reproduce the display which took care of Steven Gerrard’s side.

He said: “Celtic are coming back to their best and they will play pretty similarly to Rangers.

“They will move the ball well but we’ll have to do similarly to what we did tonight.

“We need to be dogged, determined, be compact and not let them play through us.

“If we deliver that kind of performance off the ball and then click into gear on it, we’ve got a right good chance.”
