AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic has claimed that football would be "better off" without VAR.

The added technology was brought in as a way of improving the likelihood of reaching the correct decisions, whether that be through backing up the on-field referee or providing advice to change a decision.

However, there have been a wide range of contentious calls made during 2023-24, particularly in the Premier League who do not use semi-automated offside.

That came to the fore at the weekend when Liverpool were wrongly stopped from taking the lead against Tottenham Hotspur through miscommunication between the relevant officials.

Luis Diaz scored a legitimate goal having began his run from an onside position, only for VAR to wrongly assume that the assistant had ruled it onside when, in fact, a flag had been raised.

Even when it became clear that a mistake had been made, the VAR officials were bound by the laws of football from quickly correcting the error when the game had been restarted.

With the aftermath of the mistake continuing, Liverpool's latest move being to request the conversations that took place in the VAR room, Pulisic has weighed into the debate.

Speaking to Men In Blazers, the USA international has insisted that only goalline technology should remain as an option to influence the on-field action.

Pulisic said: "I don't mind the Goal Line Technology at all, I think it's great in my opinion but other than that I know its one of those things where if it goes for you, you love it. If it's against you, you hate it.

"Eliminate it completely. Overall as a fan, I just think we're better off without it."

Immediately after the mistake in question on Saturday, the PGMOL acknowledged that a "significant human error" had occurred.

Darren England and Dan Cook - who were present in the VAR room - have since been told that they will not referee or be part of VAR during the Premier League's next batch of fixtures this weekend.

On-field referee Simon Hooper was allegedly not informed that an error had been made until half time, while Spurs took the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium moments later before going on to prevail by a 2-1 scoreline. body check tags ::
