Alaves missed the chance to jump to the top of the LaLiga table, falling to a surprise 1-0 loss at struggling Leganes.
Victory would have taken Alaves above Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla into top spot ahead of the rest of the weekend's games but Youssef En-Nesyri's 42nd-minute goal proved the decider.
The result was enough to lift the hosts out of the bottom three and they merited the result after having 13 attempts on goal compared to six for their opponents.
En-Nesyri threatened early on with a header and then made the breakthrough three minutes before half-time with a left-footed shot after being set up by Jonathan Silva.
Leganes would surely have expected to face strong pressure from Alaves in the second half but it did not materialise and it was the hosts who came close to a second before an injury-time effort from Ibai Gomez flew just over the bar.
