Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny admits that it was important to win their Champions League group after they moved above PSG on the final matchday.

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has praised his side's performance during their 4-1 victory over Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

A hat-trick from Lucas Perez and fourth from Alex Iwobi saw the Gunners end their group campaign with a victory, leaving them top of the standings after Paris Saint-Germain were surprisingly held at home by Ludogorets Razgrad.

Arsenal will now progress to the last 16 as group winners for the first time since 2012, guaranteeing them a home second leg as they bid to end a six-year wait to reach the quarter-finals.

"We needed to finish the group stage well to have no regrets and and we started the game well by scoring two early goals," he told the club's official website.

"After that we kept attacking and we were dangerous on the counter-attack, so it was a good win for us to have after our big win on Saturday (5-1 at West Ham).

"We had a small chance of finishing first. After PSG we knew we had one more game to finish first and we did the job. It's important to finish first because we have the second game at home."

The draw for the knockout stages of the Champions League will take place in Nyon on Monday.
