Robson slams Wenger

Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson has slammed the club's manager Arsene Wenger over Robin van Persie's intention to quit the Emirates.

The Dutchman said earlier this month that he would not be renewing his contract with the Gunners and only has one year left on his current deal.

The Arsenal captain has attracted interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus, and Robson has placed the blame on Wenger for allowing this situation to occur.

"There is only one person to blame [for this situation] and that's the manager. His philosophy hasn't been working in recent years. He wanted to get in young players and build them up but it hasn't worked because players want to leave when they're not winning things," Robson told talkSPORT.

"The person who runs Arsenal is Arsene Wenger. The board don't dictate to him, he dictates to them. So it's his policy that they don't want to spend big money and big wages.

"But they are paying big money to players who aren't good enough, the likes of Denilson, Vela, Bendtner. And they can't sell them because they're being paid too much money. And who pays them that money? Arsene Wenger."

Van Persie scored 37 goals for Arsenal last season.
