Danny Welbeck: 'I prefer to play as a No. 9'

New Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck admits that he prefers to play as a 'number nine' and reveals that this was one of his reasons for leaving Manchester United.

New Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has said that his preferred position is playing as a central striker.

The 23-year-old often saw his appearances limited to left-wing roles at Manchester United, which he has admitted was a deciding factor in his deadline-day move to rivals Arsenal.

With Daniel Sturridge ruled out of England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday, Welbeck may be given a central role for the national side, and he gave an unequivocal answer when quizzed about his preferred position.

"I prefer nine," he told the Independent. "I have answered this question a lot. It's up to the manager. Monday is an opportunity. Every time you get on the pitch it is an opportunity to show what you can do.

"I've never had a constant run in the team at No 9 but I have faith in my ability. If I get my opportunity to do what I know I can do then great, but I'll keep working hard.

"When I've played for England I've probably been further up the pitch but I wouldn't say I have typically played better for England. I play the same way. I give 100 per cent."

Welbeck has scored eight goals in 27 England appearances.
