Arsenal have reportedly made contact with former Valencia boss Marcelino over the vacant managerial role at the Emirates following the departure of Unai Emery.
The club is on the hunt for a new permanent boss after it was announced on Friday that Emery had been sacked after seven games without a victory.
Mikel Arteta, Brendan Rodgers, Nuno Espirito Santo, Massimiliano Allegri and Carlo Ancelotti have all been mentioned as candidates for the position .
According to The Sun, however, Marcelino has been identified by Arsenal as a surprise option for the role.
The Brazilian boss guided Valencia to consecutive Champions League qualifications, along with beating Barcelona to win the Copa del Rey, before leaving the club in September.
Former midfielder Freddie Ljungberg will take charge as interim manager until Arsenal locates a permanent replacement.
