Premier League trio 'interested in Edson Alvarez'

Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United all reportedly identify versatile Ajax player Edson Alvarez as a potential transfer target.

Three clubs in the Premier League are reportedly admirers of versatile Ajax player Edson Alvarez.

The 25-year-old is currently in his fourth season at the Eredivisie giants, making a total of 128 appearances in all competitions.

However, it is common knowledge that the Mexico international was keen to leave Ajax during the closing days of the summer transfer window due to interest from Chelsea.

With the Blues' interest emerging so late in the window, Ajax opted to retain the services of one of their key players, particularly after already selling Antony to Manchester United.

As it stands, however, Ajax may reach a point where they have to consider cashing in on another of their prized assets, who has a contract until 2025.

Unless a renewal is secured before the end of the season, Ajax will inevitably face having to try to fend off interest in a player who can be used in central defence or midfield.

According to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, who was talking to CaughtOffside, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle have all had Alvarez on their radar.

Speaking in his column, Jacobs said: "Arsenal considered Alvarez in January to a degree, but it became quickly clear Ajax didn't want to do mid-season business.

"Liverpool have looked at Alvarez before and chose not to proceed and Newcastle are another club to have him at least loosely on their radar."

Dependent on their requirements in the summer and whether European qualification is achieved, all three clubs could contest the race for Alvarez later in 2023.

Although Arsenal recently signed Jorginho from Chelsea, they are expected to be in the hunt for a new central midfielder, potentially helped by funds secured for earning a return to the Champions League.

Liverpool will be in the market for new central midfielders, as well as potentially a fresh face for the backline, and Alvarez is likely to tick several boxes with Jurgen Klopp.

The same can be said of Eddie Howe at Newcastle, who could benefit from someone of Alvarez's qualities in various positions when they are making every effort to remain within FFP. body check tags ::
