Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hints that he may try to sign a defensive midfielder and another defender before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested that he is still in the market for a defensive midfielder and a defender before the transfer window slams shut in 11 days' time.

The Gunners have added to their ranks this summer following the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers.

However, Wenger has claimed that the arrival of a new midfielder is an option following the injury blow to Mikel Arteta, while the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona could persuade Wenger to spend on more defensive cover.

When asked in this morning's press conference about the possibility of signing a defensive midfielder, Wenger told reporters: "We are not against that, no. If it's a long-term injury [for Arteta] that puts us in a position where we have to be creative.

"We are not in an emergency case but we are open to any opportunity to strengthen our defensive department."

Arsenal, who began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last Saturday, will take on Everton this weekend.
