Atletico Madrid have booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Austria Vienna at home.

Goals from Miranda, Raul Garcia, Filipe Luis and Diego Costa proved enough for Diego Simeone's side to get the better of their opponents at the Vicente Calderon and win Group G with two matches to spare.

Was the result fair?

Absolutely. Except on a couple of occasions in the opening 25 minutes, Vienna never looked like they could get anything from the match as Atletico dominated throughout. The Rojiblancos took a while to get into the groove of things, but once Miranda had given them the lead in the 11th minute, the Madrid outfit ran away with it. They could have had more goals had Costa not missed his chances or seen his penalty saved by Heinza Lindner. Granted, the opposition was mediocre but Atletico have sent a message to the rest of Europe with four successive Champions League wins that they will be very tough to beat in the last 16.

Atletico Madrid's performance

It was as flawless as it could get. Once Miranda had put Atletico ahead in the 11th minute, they simply did not have to look back. Garcia scored with a brilliant header and was a force to be reckoned with in midfield, while Juanfran and Filipe barged down the wings again and again. Costa was once again a beast up front and put the Vienna defenders under all sorts of pressure with his shootings, movements and passes. Overall, it was a comprehensive and all-round display from Atletico.

Austria Vienna's performance

Vienna did start the match with a positive spirit and showed flashes of it even after going 1-0 down in the opening minutes, but once Atletico had crafted a two-goal lead, the Austrian champions fell apart. There was no cohesion, energy or imagination in their attacks as they were forced back time and again. Their best player on the pitch was goalkeeper Lindner and that just about says it all about their display.

Diego Costa: Felipe, Juanfran and even Garcia could stake their claims for this honour, but once again Costa edges his teammates. The 25-year-old striker was tremendous up front and created Garcia's second goal with a wonderful floated cross from the right flank. He failed to convert a penalty in the 75th minute but atoned for it just minutes later with a well-taken goal. Costa had numerous chances in the second half and was a nuisance for the Vienna defenders as he ran them ragged with his movements and passes.

Biggest gaffe

For the sheer lack of a single moment that stood out, this dubious honour goes to Costa. He did everything right during the 90 minutes except convert his penalty in the 75th minute. It was a weak effort as well from 12 yards, as Lindner made a dive to turn it away.

Referee performance

Istvan Vad did not have to make any controversial decision and the match did not boil over to make his task difficult. It was an accomplished performance from the Hungarian referee, who made the right call in awarding Atletico a second-half penalty.

Atletico Madrid: Atletico will hope to continue their winning streak on Sunday when they face Villarreal away from home in La Liga.

Austria Vienna: Vienna will hope to return to winning ways on Saturday when they host Wolfsberger in the Austrian Bundesliga.
