Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder has claimed that Atletico Madrid have the credentials to win the Champions League this season.
Diego Simeone's side made the final of the competition in the 2013-14 season, but have never actually lifted the European Cup.
Sneijder, however, has praised the quality of the Spanish team ahead of their Group C clash in Istanbul on Tuesday evening.
"We need a good start despite not starting well in the league. We're a great team and we'll be competitive. Last season didn't start very well but we ended up being a good team," Sneijder told reporters.
"Atletico are a very tough opponent. They've grown a lot in recent years. Simeone is doing a great job, I respect him a lot, and it will be very difficult.
"They're one of the strongest teams in the Champions League, not just in our group. They're a candidate for the trophy. Atletico are favourites for the match, obviously, but we're at home, where there is always a good atmosphere, and we always do well."
Sneijder, meanwhile, is said to be close to signing a new two-year deal with the Turkish outfit.
