Australia forward Tim Cahill feels that his side put in an "amazing performance" in their World Cup defeat to the Netherlands.
The Socceroos proved more than a match for Louis Van Gaal's side in their Group B encounter, and even held the lead as Mile Jedinak fired them ahead in the second half from the penalty spot.
However, goals from Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay earned the win for the Oranje to book their place in the second round of the tournament.
"It was an amazing performance," Cahill told ITV Sport. "We knew this was a chance. We thought we could win this game.
"We got close. We'll earn a lot of respect from today's game."
Cahill will miss his side's final game of the World Cup against Spain after picking up his second booking of the tournament against the Netherlands.
