Barcelona could be hit with significant fines and may even be kicked out of the Champions League next season for failing to adhere to UEFA's financial regulations, according to a report.

La Blaugrana made it through to the knockout stages of this year's competition after topping their group ahead of Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Antwerp.

The La Liga champions have been paired with Napoli in the round of 16, but their participation in the tournament in future years could be in jeopardy.

As per Die Welt, Barca could be excluded from the Champions League for the 2024-25 season due to non-compliance with UEFA's financial regulations, which require clubs to ensure a balance between expenses and revenues.

The report adds that despite substantial revenue from forthcoming television and marketing rights sales, as well as other sports ventures, the club's most recent annual report highlights extraordinary financial inflows.

In September of last year, Barcelona reported a profit of £263m; however, under UEFA's financial regulations, only sales directly linked to football operations are considered significant from a compliance standpoint.

The team now faces a potential sanction that could result in a "two to three-year" disqualification from participating in the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona also incurred a fine of over £400,000 for misdeclaring their profits from the disposal of intangible assets in the 2022 financial year.
