Lionel Messi has scored his 86th goal of the calendar year to break Gerd Muller's 40-year record.
The Barcelona forward netted the all-important strike during his side's La Liga match at Real Betis on Sunday evening.
The 25-year-old has now passed former Germany striker Muller for the number of goals for both club and country during a 12-month period.
Messi has scored 30 times in 23 appearances for Barca so far this season.
