Lionel Messi both scored and missed from the penalty spot as Barcelona beat Levante 4-1 in La Liga on Sunday.

Goals from Marc Bartra and Neymar left the home side two goals ahead with 56 minutes on the clock, before Messi made it 3-0 from the penalty spot just past the hour.

Levante had one back through Victor Casadesus in the 66th minute during a good spell for the visitors, but Messi, who missed his second spot kick in the 75th minute, made it 4-1 with a cool finish in the final minute.

Here, Sports Mole has taken a closer look at how each player performed in Barcelona.

BARCELONA

Goal

Marc-Andre ter Stegen: Was culpable for the Levante goal, but did show good character to respond with some positive claims. Did not have much to do for long spells of the contest in Barcelona. (6/10)

Defence

Dani Alves: Returned to the team following an injury and was a threat down the right. Played his part in his team's second goal as he delivered a super cross towards Neymar. Had a good game. (7/10)

Javier Mascherano: Was almost caught for pace on a couple of occasions, but the centre-back never really looked in danger of losing control. Comfortable evening for the Argentine. (7/10)

Marc Bartra: Strong performance from the Spanish defender, who showed excellent composure to open the scoring early in the second half. Was also aerially dominant in a defensive area. (8/10)

Adriano: Has not played a lot of football this season and it showed. Did not do much wrong on what was a decent performance, but he just does not provide the same threat as Jordi Alba. (6/10)

Midfield

Ivan Rakitic: Provided plenty of energy in the middle of the park, but has not started the new season in top form. Had a decent penalty shout turned down in the latter stages. (6/10)

Sergio Busquets: Steady performance from the Spaniard, who was always in control of matters in the middle of the park. Replaced just past the hour as Luis Enrique looked ahead to Celta Vigo. (6/10)

Lionel Messi: Played in the number 10 position and was once again the star of the show. Scored twice and also set up Barcelona's first, but did miss from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. (9/10)

Attack

Neymar: Far from his best performance of the season, but improved in the second period and notched his second league goal of the season with a close-range finish. Always capable of the unexpected. (7/10)

Sandro Ramirez: Given the chance to lead the line with Luis Suarez on the bench, but the Spaniard found it tough to make his mark against a well-organised Levante defence. (6/10)

Munir El-Haddadi: Had a couple of decent chances in the first period, but did not show composure in front of goal. Looked lively for spells of the game, but needed to do a little bit more. (6/10)

Substitutes

Gerard Gumbau: Clearly in the plans of Enrique this season and the Spaniard, who replaced Busquets just past the hour, looked calm and confident in possession of the ball. (6/10)

LEVANTE

Goal

Ruben: Made a couple of decent saves, but was culpable for Barcelona's second when he flapped at a cross from Alves. Did not exactly instil a lot of confidence in his defenders. (6/10)

Defence

Ivan Lopez: Did a really good job of keeping Neymar out of the game in the first period and his energy down the right was a positive for Levante. Just 22, he has a good career ahead of him. (6/10)

Juanfran: Was excellent in the first period as Levante impressed with a strong defensive performance, but the 39-year-old's legs struggled to cope in the second half when Barcelona took control. (6/10)

Angel Trujillo: Alongside Juanfran, had a really good first period, but the summer signing from Almeria gave away Barcelona's first penalty when he bundled into Neymar inside the box. (6/10)

Zou Feddal: Had a horror moment in the 75th minute when he lost Messi inside the box before pulling the Argentine to the ground to concede a penalty. Really struggled in the second half. (5/10)

Tono: Was the only defender prepared to break forward in the first period, but the majority of his second half involved chasing shadows. Will be pleased to see the back of Messi. (6/10)

Midfield

Victor Camarasa: Worked hard in the middle of the park and provided excellent defensive protection in the first period, but did struggle to make his influence known after the interval. (6/10)

Verza: Picked up the game's only yellow card for a poor tug on Messi in the latter stages of the first period. Did not really offer anything for the visitors in the final third. (5/10)

Jefferson Lerma: Was a big ask to expect the 20-year-old to seriously influence matters at Camp Nou, but he showed good ability on the ball and was also prepared to track back. (6/10)

Attack

Roger Marti: Tested Ter Stegen with a long-range attempt in the second period, but simply did not have enough service to make a serious impression. Was subbed off in Levante's second change. (6/10)

Nabil Ghilas: Had Levante's outstanding chance of the first period, but lashed his effort wide of the post from inside the box. Worked hard, but had little joy and was replaced just past the hour. (6/10)

Substitutes

Victor Casadesus: Only on the field for 30 minutes, but made a big impression. Scored Levante's consolation goal in the 66th minute and also came close with a long-range attempt. (7/10)

Deyverson: Was a surprise that the £1m summer signing did not start, but he was introduced for the final 20 minutes and his pace stretched the Barcelona defence. (6/10)

Ruben Garcia: This should be the season where the 22-year-old really establishes himself in the Levante team, but he had little time to make an impact after only entering in the 80th minute. (6/10)
