Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Muller scored a hat-trick last night to help his side begin their defence of the German Cup with a comfortable victory.
Muller added a penalty kick to a pair of neat finishes against fifth-division BSV Rehden, helping Bayern ease through to the second round with a 5-0 success.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Arjen Robben were also on target for Pep Guardiola's side, who rested key players including captain Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribery against the part-time outfit.
Schalke 04 also ensured safe passage to the second round, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on target in a 2-0 win over Noettingen.
Werder Bremen were not able to join their Bundesliga rivals in the next round, after they fell to a shock 3-1 defeat against third division outfit Sarrebruck.
