Roberto Martinez is pleased with his Belgium charges for sealing the national team's best ever World Cup finish in their third-place playoff triumph over England.

Roberto Martinez has hailed Belgium's best ever finish at a World Cup following their 2-0 win over England in the third-place playoff.

Thomas Meunier opened the scoring for the Red Devils on four minutes and Eden Hazard made sure of victory over the Three Lions eight minutes from time.

Belgium's previous best World Cup result was fourth at Mexico 1986, and Martinez was eager to praise his players for their podium finish at Russia 2018.

"It's all about the achievement," Martinez told ITV Sport. "This is Belgium's best finish at a World Cup. The players deserve that and they wanted to make the country proud.

"We had 10 different goalscorers, the joint best in World Cup history. This team have broken records in the right way."

France also reached double figures in terms of scorers at Spain 1982, level with Italy at Germany 2006.
