It took until the 18th minute for either side to fire a meaningful shot towards goal, but Tom Lawrence couldn't keep his shot down from inside the area after skipping past Paul Caddis and Michael Morrison.
Shane Duffy came closest for Birmingham in the opening 45 minutes, but his header from Craig Conway's cross looped over the bar.
David Cotterill had the chance to open the scoring on the stroke of half time, but his free kick from 25 yards was deflected behind off the wall.
