Blackburn Rovers are reportedly hopeful of signing experienced defender Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old former Rangers, Aston Villa and Sunderland centre-half is currently without a club after being released by the Black Cats at the end of last season.
The Ewood Park outfit are confident that they have the attacking firepower to launch a promotion bid but want to improve at the back, and Sky Sports News claims that Cuellar is a primary target.
It remains to be seen whether Cuellar, who has made 124 Premier League appearances since leaving Scotland in 2008, would drop down into the Championship as he also considers a return to Spain.
Rovers manager Gary Bowyer has already signed strikers Luke Varney and Chris Brown this summer and has loaned Alex Baptiste from Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers for the duration of the campaign.
