Montpellier's chances of qualifying for Europe next season have taken a further blow as they went down 4-2 to Bordeaux away from home in Ligue 1.
The hosts made the breakthrough as early as the 11th minute through Lamine Sane, who shot home from close range following a corner from Gregory Sertic.
Cheick Diabate made it 2-0 to Bordeaux in the 24th minute with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box after latching onto Nicolas Maurice-Belay's pass.
Two minutes later Jaroslav Plasil scored his side's third goal of the evening as he turned in Benoit Tremoulinas's cross.
Bordeaux could have added more to their tally as Diabate had two chances in quick succession thereafter and Ludovic Obraniak had his long-range effort saved in the 44th minute.
Montpellier gave themselves a chance of staging a comeback in the second half as they pulled one back on the stroke of half time, Souleymane Camara setting up Remy Cabella with a through-ball to slot home from close range.
However, Henri Saivet put flight to the defending French champions' hopes of a comeback just nine minutes into the second period as he combined with Tremoulinas to score Bordeaux's fourth and final goal of the match.
Benjamin Stambouli did score for Montpellier in the second minute of injury time but it was too little too late.
