A late Robert Lewandowski goal has given Borussia Dortmund the win against Ajax in their Champions League match this evening.
Dortmund came close to taking the lead when Lewandowski tried lifting the ball over the oncoming Vermeer, but his effort just missed. Schmelzer then spurned a good chance to break the deadlock, firing straight at the keeper after being found by Reus.
Lewandowski then missed another fine chance, cutting inside before unleashing an effort that flew over the bar. Vermeer was once again on hand to deny the hosts after 52 minutes, saving Reus's low shot.
Dortmund were handed a perfect chance to take the lead just five minutes later when Ricardo van Rhijn brought down Gotze inside the box, but Hummels's penalty was poor and saved by Vermeer.
Reus went close with a speculative effort before the deadlock was finally broken in the 87th minute. Lewandowski shook off the challenge of Alderweireld before slamming his effort home from close range to hand his side the three points.
