Dermot Gallagher defends referee over decision to book Bournemouth's Adam Smith

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher claims that Bournemouth defender Adam Smith gave the referee a reason to book him for diving against Southampton.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has suggested that Bournemouth defender Adam Smith was at fault for being booked for diving against Southampton.

Smith has revealed that referee Jonathan Moss has apologised for failing to award Bournemouth a penalty during the first half of the south coast derby with the Saints, with Smith being given his fifth yellow card of the season and now having to serve a one-match ban.

However, while admitting that the Cherries should have been given a spot kick, Gallagher has claimed that the referee had reason to believe that Smith had dived.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "Yes, it's a penalty. We talk about players winning penalties, here, Smith has lost the penalty.

"It is a foul but the way he goes oversells to the referee that he's dived. Jon Moss' instant reaction is to think he's dived."

The match at the Vitality Stadium would eventually end in a 1-1 draw.
