Bournemouth have closed in on the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier ahead of their return to the Premier League, according to a report.

The Cherries have been fairly quiet in the transfer market since sealing their promotion from the Championship last season, only bringing in Ryan Fredericks and Joe Rothwell on free transfers so far.

However, Scott Parker's side have continued to pursue a move for Tavernier for much of the summer, after tabling a £10m bid for the Boro academy product earlier in the window.

Fellow newly-promoted side Nottingham Forest are also said to have matched their bid in recent weeks, but Bournemouth have won the race according to The Athletic.

The report suggests that the initial £10m fee has been agreed between the two clubs, but with an additional £2.5m also being included in potential add-ons.

Tavernier was part of the Boro side that narrowly missed out on the Championship playoff places under Chris Wilder last season, during which he scored five goals and registered as many assists in 44 league appearances.

However, it looks as though the midfielder will get his chance of making his Premier League debut after all next season, should he complete his move to the South Coast. body check tags ::
