Hello and welcome to
Sports Mole's live text coverage of the international friendly between
Brazil and Panama at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal. The Selecao have won six matches in a row since their disappointing
World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Belgium last summer, scoring 12 goals without conceding, and their preparations for the Copa America are now in full swing. Panama, by comparison, have lost five of their last six friendly games.
BRAZIL TEAM NEWS!STARTING XI: Ederson; Fagner, Militao, Miranda, Telles; Arthur, Casemiro, Paqueta; Coutinho, Firmino, Richarlison
SUBS: Neres, Danilo, Everton, Weverton, Marquinhos, Alisson, Sandro, Gabriel Jesus, Allan, Anderson, Fabinho, Silva
PANAMA TEAM NEWS!STARTING XI: Mejia; Murillo, Machado, Cummings, Escobar, Davies; Quintero, Cooper, Godoy, Luis Rodriguez; Torres
SUBS: Mosquera, Arroyo, Blackman, Nelson, Vargas, Walker, Browne
KICKOFF: Brazil show eight changes from their most recent outing, a 1-0 win over Cameroon in November, with Firmino, Arthur and Ederson the three players to retain their place in the side. Panama get us up and running at the Estadio do Dragao!
Richarlison slides the ball into the path of Fagner but the overlapping full-back cannot quite bring it under control. Had he done so, there would have been options in the famous yellow strip awaiting a simple finish.
Brazil win a free kick in a deep position. The training ground routine does not pay off, though, as it is worked short and Arthur's attempted reverse pass in behind is cut out. The South American nation are dominating possession early on.
Coutinho clips a delightful pass into the box and Richarlison looked to do well to nod it down into the path of Paqueta, but the referee felt that the Everton forward barged into his opponent and a free kick is awarded to Panama.
Coutinho is the man dictating play from a deeper position. The Barcelona midfielder, who has had to answer more questions about his long-term future at Camp Nou this week, is constantly trying to feed the ball over the top.
Machado catches Firmino pretty late and earns a telling-off from the referee. Panama are trying their best to disrupt play, and they are succeeding for the time being.
Tite's side are up to 83% in terms of possession. Richarlison, who offers a direct route through on goal, is a little heavy with his second touch when trying to cut inside and Panama are able to see out this latest Brazil attack.
Quintero bursts away from Coutinho and the Barcelona midfielder sees no other option but to bring down his opposite number. Panama are enjoying the odd spell on the ball but they are getting nowhere near Ederson's goal.
Escobar rifles a shot towards goal from 40 yards and it nearly falls for Torres in front of Ederson, but even if he had controlled it the offside flag would have denied him. This is a good spell for the Central Americans.
Brazil have lost their rhythm over the last 10 minutes. A long ball over the top towards Richarlison bounces nicely for Mejia to collect in the Panama goal. Tite will not be entirely happy with his side's showing thus far.
Arthur plays the ball down the right for Fagner to latch onto. The full-back cannot quite squeeze it through his opponent's legs, though he does at least win a corner, which comes to little. Brazil are starting to rebuild some momentum once again.
CLOSE! This is the closest either side has come to making a breakthrough as Firmino climbs highest to get on the end of Coutinho's cross, which he guides over the crossbar from 10 yards. That was a difficult headed chance.
Richarlison is the latest player to outjump his man to get on the end of a Coutinho cross, this time from the right, but he was all over his opponent and the free kick is awarded to Panama. Los Canaleros have been guilty of some pretty bad challenges in the opening quarter of the match.
SHOT! The ball is cut out but it falls nicely for Arthur to strike just outside the box. The midfielder certainly catches it well - perhaps a little too well, as the ball flies wide of the target. Brazil are starting to knock on the door now.
CLOSE! Arthur controls the ball beautifully 25 yards from goal and works the angle for a shot, dragging the ball inches wide of the far post. The Brazil midfielder has come close twice in the space of two minutes, both from identical positions.
PENALTY APPEAL! Cummings is perhaps fortunate that this is only a friendly. The Panama defender is caught out by Firmino and drags his opponent to the ground. The contact starts outside the box but arguably continues into it, though it is just a free kick for Brazil.
SHOT! Coutinho gets far too much bend on the free kick, which sails over the crossbar. A disappointing attempt from the Barcelona ace.
PENALTY APPEAL! Quintero rifles the ball goalwards and there is an argument over whether it hit Militao on the arm. If it did, there was very little distance between the ball and the player's arm, so the referee is probably correct to wave away the pen appeals.
GOAL! BRAZIL 1-0 PANAMA (LUCAS PAQUETA)
Just when the tempo of their play had dropped, Brazil shift through the gears and open the scoring at the Estadio do Dragao. Casemiro's first-time cross towards the back post is met by Paqueta, who fires a low shot back across goal. Mejia got a hand to it and will perhaps feel he could have kept it out.
That really was a brilliant pass from Casemiro, who knew exactly where he wanted to send the ball before it arrived at his feet. The goal will also lift some of the pressure off Paqueta's shoulders - there is nothing like a first international goal, especially in this famous kit.
GOAL! BRAZIL 1-1 PANAMA (ADOLFO MACHADO)
Machado heads Panama level, less than five minutes after they fell behind! It is a superb header from the skipper, guiding Davis's deep free kick out of Ederson's reach. Machado was a fair way out and had to get both power and precision on his header.
CHANCE! Richarlison gets on the end of Telles's cross at the back post but can only head the ball into the ground and wide of the target. Replays of Panama's equaliser show that Machado may have been stood in an offside position - we will give him the benefit of the doubt as it was a superb header.
Brazil have started to take control of the ball now but they are running out of time to regain their lead before half time. Panama are doing well to shut down their opponents, but the ball falls nicely for Paqueta in the box, only for his shot to be blocked.
Tite's side are pushing their opponents further and further back. Mejia has not been tested enough in this first half, though, and Panama will feel that they deserve to be level at the break. Just two minutes of the first half remain.
Panama are trying their best to keep hold of the ball. Just a single minute has been added on at the end of the first half.
HALF TIME: BRAZIL 1-1 PANAMA
Brazil have been frustrated by Panama in the first half of this international friendly, going into half time all square at 1-1. Paqueta opened the scoring for Tite's side just after the half-hour mark, but it took just four minutes for Machado to respond at the other end of the pitch.
Brazil, who had not conceded a goal during their six-match winning run heading into this contest, started the brighter of the two sides but struggled to create clear-cut chances. It took until 21 minutes into the game before Roberto Firmino outjumped his opponent for the first chance at either end, which he headed over the crossbar.
Arthur fired wide from the edge of the box twice in the space of two minutes as the Selecao started to turn the screw, and Tite's men had a penalty appeal rejected moments later when Firmino was dragged down by Harold Cummings. Panama, who themselves has a pen shout rejected for a handball against Eder Militao, held off their opponents for half an hour but the breakthrough arrived via the boot of
Lucas Paqueta.
Casemiro swept a first-time ball towards the back post and Paqueta fired it back across goal into the back of the net, though Luis Mejia got something to it and will perhaps feel that he should have kept the shot out. Panama responded well, though, and they were level less than five minutes later through
Adolfo Machado's powerful and precise header, getting on the end of Eric Davis's deep delivery to end Brazil's impressive defensive run without conceding.
Richarlison headed wide at the back post from the first half's only other real opportunity, so Brazil have work to do in the second half if they are to keep their winning run going. Here is a reminder of both sides' benches...
BRAZIL SUBS: Neres, Danilo, Everton, Weverton, Marquinhos, Alisson, Sandro, Gabriel Jesus, Allan, Anderson, Fabinho, Silva
PANAMA SUBS: Mosquera, Arroyo, Blackman, Nelson, Vargas, Walker, Browne
KICKOFF: Brazil, requiring at least one goal to make it seven wins in a row, get us back up and running at the Estadio do Dragao!
SAVE! The Selecao had made a positive start to the second half, but they needed Ederson to make a big stop to keep them level. Rodriguez drills the ball goalwards from the edge of the box and Ederson did very well to get across and make the save.
Panama are looking very well organised, frustrating their opponents as we edge ever nearer to the hour mark. Tite decided against making any changes at the interval, but we will surely see some rotation over the next 15 minutes.
OFF THE BAR! Fagner has time to look up and pick out Richarlison in the middle. The Everton forward hits the ball first time and catches the underside of the crossbar, with everyone else around him seemingly stood still. So unlucky!
Panama have done well to restrict their opponents, but Brazil are still managing to create the odd chance - that crossbar hit from Richarlison the latest. Paqueta decides to have a go from goal from 25 yards, shooting into the stands.
This is a disappointing one from Panama's perspective as Davis's cross - right on the money for Machado's opener - is overhit and curls straight out of play. The Central Americans need to make the most of their set-piece opportunities.
The final ball from both sides has been pretty poor in this second half. Nearly an hour has been played but both managers are holding off from making changes. Jesus is among those likely to be introduced at some point by Tite.
CHANCE! This is a glorious chance for Paqueta, who is teed up by a superb touch from Firmino. The goalscorer is put under pressure by Godoy and can only pick out Mejia after losing his footing. Brazil, ironically, are starting to find their feet again.
This is a real let-off for Brazil. Cummings gets on the end of a free kick and heads the ball against the underside of the crossbar. The offside flag would have denied him had it crossed the line but yet again Tite's men were caught out.
BRAZIL SUBS! Everton and Jesus are on for Firmino and Paqueta as Tite makes his first changes of the contest.
PENALTY APPEAL! Davis has his hands all over Richarlison inside the box but the forward does not help himself with the manner he hit the ground. The referee waves away the penalty appeals and is probably right in doing so. This game remains delicately poised with 25 minutes to go.
Coutinho once again sends a delightful ball into the box from deep. Richarlison tries to get to it but Mejia reads the danger well and gets to it first, taking out his opponent in the process. There is a stoppage in play for the Panama keeper to receive some treatment.
Panama are doing just about enough to keep their opponents at arm's length. With a little over 20 minutes to go it is now a case of digging deep and holding out for the full-time whistle. What a result this would be for Los Canaleros!
SAVE! This is brilliant from Richarlison, who somehow manages to wriggle away from a couple of men and then has just Mejia to beat, but the angle is against him and the Panama keeper makes the save. From the next attack, Richarlison's shot is blocked behind.
OFF THE BAR! Brazil are doing everything other than scoring at the moment. Casemiro makes good contact with his header when the corner is whipped into the box, but the ball crashes back off the crossbar. Richarlison cannot react, sending the rebound wide of the target.
SAVE! It is constant pressure from Brazil now as Casemiro's free kick is superbly struck and well kept out by a diving Mejia. Mejia has just been shown a yellow card by the referee for time wasting, as Nelson comes on for Torres and Anderson replaces Arthur.
Mejia does well to improvise and scoop the ball away from Richarlison, who would have had a simple header at the back post if not for the keeper's intervention. The pressure is continuing to build on the Panama goal - can they hold on for 13 more minutes?
Tite will be a tad concerned that his side have been unable to break down Panama in the near-50 minutes since the opposition side levelled up the match. It may only be a friendly, but the Central Americans will celebrate this draw like a victory.
Panama are doing well to take their time over set-pieces in an attempt to eat up as many seconds as they can. Los Canaleros look as though they are about to make another change, with just nine minutes of normal time left to play.
PANAMA SUB! Walker is replaced by Cooper for the closing stages. Brazil have plenty of urgency about their play but it has been a while since they came close to scoring what would surely be a winning goal.
Brazil have just spent a minute passing the ball around their midfielders, searching for a passing angle into the final third but failing to find it. Panama eventually turn over possession and the stoppage in play will give them a chance to make a change.
PANAMA SUB! Quintero and Murillo are replaced by Browne and Blackman. This has been a very good performance from Panama, who are now around six or seven minutes away from a famous result.
Mejia is again quickly off his line to cut out a Coutinho cross. Panama have a chance to counter but Davis is tripped by Militao and the Central Americans will happily accept the free kick. They are very nearly over the line!
PANAMA SUB! Escobar gets across to the ball to end this latest Brazil attack after the corner was worked short. Vargas is now on for Godoy in what will likely be the final change of the contest. Five minutes have been added on here.
CLOSE! We have just about played half of the five minutes of added-on time and Brazil have come no closer to scoring a second goal. Brazil win a free kick deep on the right-hand side, but Militao can only guide it over the bar when barging through a sea of bodies.
CLOSE! So, so close to a Panama winner with 30 seconds left on the clock! Debutant Blackman cuts the ball back for Nelson, who has time and space to pick his spot. It looks as though he found the bottom corner, but it was the side-netting. What a chance to become a hero back in his homeland!
FULL TIME: BRAZIL 1-1 PANAMA
Brazil are held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Panama in one of their final friendlies before this summer's Copa America. The Selecao opened the scoring through Paqueta's first international goal, but Machado equalised less than five minutes later and Los Canaleros just about managed to hold on for the remainder of the match, with the frame of their goal twice coming to their rescue.
