Brighton have beaten Wrexham 5-4 on penalties after the two sides finished 1-1 after extra time in their FA Cup third-round replay.

Matt Sparrow had an early opportunity for the visitors when his low effort flew just wide of the Wrexham goal.

Jamie Tolley nearly gave Wrexham the lead when he blasted his shot over following Andy Morrell's blocked effort.

Morrell put the Welsh side ahead in the 23rd minute after he curled his strike into the top corner of the Brighton net.

Will Hoskin's header came close to drawing the Championship side level, but the hosts were able to clear their lines.

As Wrexham came out strong at the start of the second half, Glen Little blazed over following good work from Morrell, while Adrian Cieslewicz's shot was easily saved by Peter Brezovan.

Ashley Barnes eventually found an equaliser for Gus Poyet's side with 13 minutes to go when he nodded in Sparrow's teasing cross.

As Wrexham waned, Craig Mackail-Smith could have won it late in normal time for Brighton but his shot flashed across the goal.

Barnes had an opportunity to grab his second of the match in the first period of extra time, but his shot was charged down by the home defence.

Mark Creighton almost put Wrexham back in the lead minutes later when his close-range header was pushed away by Brezovan.

Dean Keates's saved penalty was enough to see Brighton book their place in the fourth round and a home tie against Newcastle United.
