Beram Kayal came close to doubling Brighton's lead a few moments later with an effort from the edge of the penalty area, but the Israel international fired just wide of the Hull goal.
Hull's first chance of the match came after 18 minutes, as on-loan striker Chuba Akpom took a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, but the youngster's effort went high and wide of the Brighton goal.
The Arsenal loanee almost found an equaliser for the visitors before half time, as the striker picked up a good pass from Tom Huddlestone, but his effort hit the side-netting.
