Albion beat Burnley 2-1.

Burton boss Nigel Clough hopes his team can transfer their Carabao Cup form into their League One campaign.

Albion are into the fourth round for the first time in their history after coming from behind to defeat Burnley 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Kevin Long headed the Premier League strugglers in front just before half time but Liam Boyce equalised and then set up the winning goal for Jamie Allen, at a time when Burnley were piling on the pressure.

Burton, who overcame Aston Villa in the previous round, have made a slow start in League One following relegation from the Championship last season.

Clough said: “It was an outstanding performance and result at the end of it. We have been playing well for a few weeks now and it will hopefully improve our confidence going into the league.

“We don’t get the chance to play Premier League opposition very often and we tried to make it a special night and the players did that tonight. To a man we did our jobs.

“It was a proper cup tie right from the first minute – it would have been a good one for TV tonight. The kind of game neutrals want to see.

“We rode our luck at times but it was surprisingly even over all. Getting into the fourth round for the first time puts it into perspective what a small club we are and how far we have come.”

For Burnley boss Sean Dyche it was more League Cup embarrassment at the hands of lower league opposition, following exits at the hands of Port Vale and Accrington in recent years.

He said: “This competition is the only one left to do well in during my time at Burnley and it’s something we wanted to correct.

“It hasn’t got the same feeling as a Premier League game and often these things happen. It must be a mindset with the players as it’s certainly not quality.

“We prepared right and there was a good feeling but we didn’t do well enough in front of their goal.”
