West Ham United closed the gap on leaders Southampton at the top of the Championship to one point by defeating Cardiff City 2-0 this afternoon.
Hosting Cardiff had the better of the opening exchanges, with Kenny Miller sending their best effort over the bar in the 13th minute.
Just as the match looked to be heading into the break level, the Hammers broke the deadlock. Jack Collison found Kevin Nolan, who opened up his body before curling a low effort beyond the reach of David Marshall in the home goal.
Goalscoring chances were few and far between after the restart as the game descended into a midfield battle.
However, full-back George McCartney made sure of the points for West Ham 14 minutes from time. The defender cut inside from right left flank and sent a bouncing effort past a rooted Marshall.
