Edinson Cavani scores twice as Paris Saint-Germain cruise to a 5-0 win over Celtic at Parkhead in their opening Champions League fixture of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain have kicked off their 2017-18 Champions League campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.

The much-fancied Parisians bagged three goals in the opening 40 minutes of the contest, courtesy of their famed front-three trio, before adding a couple more late on.

Neymar was first on target to open the scoring, while Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani - the latter from the penalty spot - followed suit in a dominant first half to eventually inflict a record European home defeat on Celtic.

PSG were on top from the off, pegging their opponents back and finding the net for the first time 16 minutes in through a Cavani tap-in that was rightly ruled out for offside.

There was to be no stopping Neymar four minutes later, though, as he calmly lifted the ball over Craig Gordon when picked out by Adrien Rabiot's perfectly-weighted pass, soon after the Scottish keeper had denied Cavani from inside the box.

Celtic initially responded well to the setback, coming close to levelling up through a Leigh Griffiths free kick from range that needed helping over the bar by Alphonse Areola.

Then came what already appeared to be a killer second for the visitors, with Neymar heading the ball back across goal for fellow summer signing Mbappe to tuck home towards the back post after Cavani fluffed his lines.

The third of the evening would arrive before the interval, this time through Cavani from the penalty spot following Jozo Simunovic's pullback on the Uruguayan striker inside the box.

Celtic saved their best moment of the first half until the dying embers through Scott Sinclair, who burst into the box and sent a shot on target for Areola to palm over the crossbar.

It was the Bhoys who looked the brighter in the early stages of the second half, largely due to PSG simply sitting back, but they could only seriously test Areola on one occasion via Sinclair's front-post shot.

Neymar then sent one attempt over the bar and another wide of the target from 12 yards out, either side of a wasted opportunity from Mbappe who picked out the face of Anthony Ralston in front of goal.

PSG did add to their tally late in the match, however - first through a Mikael Lustig own goal after the defender turned Julian Draxler's cross into his own net, before Cavani rounded things off in style.

Layvin Kurzawa sent in a decent delivery from out wide, but the PSG striker had no right to head past Gordon from an awkward angle to cement his position as the visitors' record all-time scorer in the Champions League.
