A Charlie Austin strike was enough to end Burnley's winless run of six games as they secured a vital win over Charlton Athletic at The Valley.
The visitors started the game brightly and could have taken the lead in the opening minutes but Martin Paterson fired his effort over the bar when well placed in the penalty area.
Debutant Alex Kacaniklic came close to firing the visitors into the lead as he found space inside the box, but David Button made a good save from close range.
Charlie Austin finally broke the deadlock just before the break as he powered an effort home into the roof of the net, leaving Button with no chance.
After the break, Austin almost doubled his side's lead after Button fumbled a shot from distance but the keeper managed to smother the ball at the feet of the striker before he could pounce.
Charlton responded and Danny Haynes came so close to getting his side level when he met Jon Obika's cross but Lee Grant made the save, tipping the ball over the bar.
Haynes was again in the action as he rose highest in the area meeting a corner, but his glancing header went across the face of goal and dropped the wrong side of the post.
