Champions League: Chelsea vs. Real Madrid head-to-head record

Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg between Chelsea and Real Madrid, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between the two clubs.

Real Madrid are in pole position to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Chelsea, with the two sides set to lock horns for the second leg of their quarter-final on Tuesday night.

Los Blancos, who are the reigning European champions, recorded a 2-0 victory over the Blues in the first leg last week, with Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio on the scoresheet.

Chelsea have now lost four of their last five matches in all competitions, while they have not won a single game since their 3-1 success at Leicester City towards the start of March.

Frank Lampard's side will enter the match off the back of a 2-1 home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, while Real Madrid were 2-0 winners over Cadiz in La Liga at the weekend.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the head-to-head record between the two sides ahead of the second leg of their last-eight European contest in the English capital.

Somewhat surprisingly, there have only ever been eight meetings between Chelsea and Real Madrid throughout history, and it is the English outfit that lead the overall head-to-head, winning four, drawing two and losing two of their previous contests with the most successful side in the history of the Champions League.

Their first ever meeting came in the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1971, with the initial match being drawn 1-1, before Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners in the decider to triumph.

Chelsea also overcame Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Super Cup in 1998, while the two teams have locked horns on five occasions in the Champions League.

The London giants recorded a 3-1 aggregate victory over Los Blancos in the semi-finals of the 2020-21 Champions League, which included a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

However, Real Madrid came out on top when the two teams met in the quarter-finals of last season's competition, with the Spanish side triumphing 5-4 on aggregate.

Carlo Ancelotti's team recorded a 3-1 victory in the first leg at Stamford Bridge to place themselves in a strong position in the tie; Chelsea actually won the return match 3-2 at Bernabeu, but it was not enough to advance, with the La Liga outfit progressing to the final.

The two teams, as mentioned, then locked horns for the eighth time in the first leg last week, with Benzema and Asensio on the scoresheet in a two-goal success for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid will have fond memories of their last visit to Stamford Bridge last April and will be expecting to finish the job on Tuesday evening to book their spot in the semi-finals once again.
