Jose Mourinho warns against lofty expectations

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants time to work with his squad, while admitting they are no match for the batch of players he inherited in 2004.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has warned that things are very different from the first time he took over at Stamford Bridge, pleading for time to get the best out of his star-studded squad.

Mourinho has failed to win his last three games in charge of the Blues, with Chelsea suffering their first defeat in the Premier League against Everton last weekend.

The Portuguese coach has asked for patience and insisted that his second spell in West London bears no resemblance to the domestic superiority he enjoyed first time round.

He told The Mirror: "No, it is not 2004 all over again. Then we lost against Manchester City in October, our only defeat. But that is not the point. We are not unbeatable. This is a different team.

"I came here to work, I don't say peacefully because I am the first one that does not like to work peacefully, but to work with time, to develop the players and play the best they and we can.

"We have to be effective, be adult and not naive. That is what we have to work on. We have to transform the beautiful football we played into goals. We are not a club who will accept in a cool way that things will come. We're going to chase it.

The Blues get their Champions League campaign underway this evening against FC Basel, a side they beat in last season's Europa League semi-finals.
