Two of the most revered names in English football step out onto the Wembley turf with the FA Cup on the line on Saturday, as Liverpool and Chelsea meet in the 2021-22 final.

The Blues are going in search of their ninth FA Cup crown - the most recent of which came in the 2017-18 campaign - but they have since lost back-to-back finals against Arsenal and Leicester City at the home of English football.

Meanwhile, it has been a long and painful 16 years since Liverpool last got their hands on the trophy after defeating West Ham United in the 2005-06 final - their seventh triumph in the tournament - and the two behemoths of the game are no stranger to meeting one another with a trophy on the line.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Liverpool and Chelsea's previous cup final meetings ahead of what promises to be a fascinating spectacle at Wembley.

Not until the 2004-05 EFL Cup final would Chelsea and Liverpool first do battle in a showpiece event, but it was worth the wait, as the Reds went ahead through John Arne Riise's strike with less than a minute on the clock before Steven Gerrard headed into his own net to set up extra time.

The Blues took the game by the scruff of the neck in extra time as Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman propelled them into a 3-1 lead, and Liverpool could not produce a storming comeback despite setting up a nervy finish through Antonio Nunez's header.

Barely a year later, Liverpool would earn a small slice of revenge with a 2-1 victory in the 2006 Community Shield, as Riise was once again the thorn in Chelsea's side with an early goal before Andriy Shevchenko drew his side level on the stroke of half time.

With 80 minutes on the clock, Peter Crouch headed home to win the day for Liverpool, and there would not be another cup final meeting between the two sides until their inaugural FA Cup final showdown in 2012.

The early goals had not ceased six years later, as Chelsea went ahead through Ramires in the 11th minute, and Pepe Reina was nutmegged again in the second half - this time by Drogba to put the Blues 2-0 up before the hour mark.

Andy Carroll reduced the deficit before running away to celebrate when he thought he had headed home a second, but Petr Cech just about managed to prevent the whole of the ball from going over the line in another cup victory for the London club.

The streak of Chelsea winning one then Liverpool winning one continued into the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, as the two clubs could not be separated following a 1-1 draw in normal time and further strikes from Sadio Mane and Jorginho in the extra-time period.

After nine perfect spot kicks, the forgotten man Adrian kept out Tammy Abraham's effort to lift the European honour for Liverpool, who would finally get the better of Chelsea in a domestic cup final only three months ago.

Following 120 minutes of disallowed goals galore and 21 penalties flying into the back of the net, Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga blazed over the bar after Caoimhin Kelleher had converted for the Reds, who ignited their quadruple pursuit on that fateful day and will leave it all out on the pitch in the hopes of keeping those dreams alive this weekend. body check tags ::
