Manchester City beat Chelsea 2-0 in their FA Cup fifth-round tie at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by claiming a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.

The hosts came close to taking the lead when Yaya Toure saw his powerful strike spilled by Petr Cech, and Stevan Jovetic followed up to fire the loose ball against the top of the crossbar.

City opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Edin Dzeko played Jovetic through on goal, and he kept his composure to calmly slide the ball into the bottom corner past the keeper.

Branislav Ivanovic caused a moment of panic in the home side's defence when he burst down the right wing and drilled a shot across goal that Costel Pantilimon spilled, but the keeper was able to gather the ball at the second attempt.

Manuel Pellegrini's side were enjoying more of the ball and Toure fired a shot wide, before Cech had to be alert to tip Dzeko's curling effort out of danger.

The Citizens came close to adding a second at the end of the half when Dzeko was inches away from connecting with James Milner's fierce ball across the box.

After the break the home side continued to dominate the proceedings, with Jovetic firing over and Dzeko seeing a strike blocked by Gary Cahill.

City doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Samir Nasri threaded a ball through for David Silva, before getting on the end of the Spaniard's return pass across the box to slot home from close range.

The hosts thought that they had scored a third goal through Joleon Lescott, who put the ball into the net after Javi Garcia's header was saved by Cech, but the flag was raised for offside.

Chelsea pressed hard to get back into the contest, but they were unable to find a way through their opponents, who held on to seal a spot in the last eight of the competition
