Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has confirmed that defender Reece James is to undergo another scan on his hamstring after attempting to return to action in training this week.
The 23-year-old last featured for the Blues last month in the Champions League and has only managed to start 14 league matches this season - his lowest total during a single term at the club.
A second trip to Manchester in five days did not bear any rewards on Thursday night as the West Londoners were thrashed 4-1 by Manchester United, with Joao Felix bagging a consolation for the visitors late on.
Following the defeat at Old Trafford, Lampard updated the Evening Standard on James's injury: "He came out [to train] yesterday but went back in, because he had a little bit of awareness [of the injury]. We hope the scan will show there's no real damage."
It was hoped that James would be able to feature for Chelsea in their season finale at home to Newcastle United on Sunday, however that goal has now been thrown into serious doubt.
Lampard's men can only finish as high as 11th in the Premier League after a difficult campaign, and even maximum points this weekend are not likely to not be enough to leapfrog Crystal Palace if the Eagles were to pick up a result against Nottingham Forest. body check tags ::
