Ki Sung-Yueng scores the winning goal in extra time as Sunderland beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.

Sunderland have progressed to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup with a dramatic extra-time victory against Chelsea.

Chelsea pushed forwards early on and Willian found Andre Schurrle, who hit a 20-yard shot into the arms of Vito Mannone.

The away side continued to have the better of the play in the opening 20 minutes, but Frank Lampard blasted one wide from long range and Schurrle's cut-back evaded everyone in the box after he had beaten Wes Brown.

As the first half progressed the match turned slightly scrappy, with neither side creating any clear-cut chances.

Willian and Lampard combined after Sunderland had failed to clear, but the Brazilian's shot was off target and wide of the post.

Chelsea began to up the tempo before the break, but Schurrle scuffed a shot wide after good work to beat his marker.

The second half was only a minute old when Lampard bundled the ball in for the opening goal, although he had to rely on the goal decision system for confirmation.

It could have soon been 2-0 to the visitors as Samuel Eto'o capitalised on a mistake in the Black Cats defence to go clear through on goal, but his effort went wide.

Mannone produced a good save from Kevin de Bruyne's shot, before Lampard went close with a powerful effort.

Sunderland then pushed their opponents back with a period of sustained pressure. However, Lee Cattermole fired a long-range shot straight at Mark Schwarzer.

Chelsea began to increase the intensity as the match reached the final 10 minutes, but Schurrle again found Mannone in good form after tricking his way past Cattermole.

However, just as the Black Cats seemed to have run out of ideas, Fabio Borini reacted fastest after Schwarzer had parried an effort to equalise with just four minutes left.

The striker could have won it in injury time, but Gary Cahill got back to prevent the ball from going in the bottom corner.

In the early stages of extra time, David Luiz forced Mannone into a sprawling save, but Borini missed a decent chance for Gus Poyet's side when he struck a volley wide from a Emanuele Giaccherini cross.

Lampard and Demba Ba linked up well to set up De Bruyne, but he dragged his shot wide from outside the box. The Black Cats then almost won it when Ki Sung-Yueng's effort hit Jozy Altidore and appeared to be going in, but Michael Essien cleared off the line.

Schwarzer saved well to deny Ki, but the midfielder scored the winning goal just two minutes before the end of extra time as he skipped past Essien to drill a low shot into the corner.
