Sports Mole takes a look back over Chelsea's 2-1 victory away at Aston Villa.

Frank Lampard became Chelsea's leading scorer of all time by scoring both goals as the Blues won 2-1 at Aston Villa this afternoon.

Christian Benteke put the home side in front, before Ramires saw red for Chelsea.

Goalscorer Benteke was then also red carded, before record-breaker Lampard struck twice to claim all three points for the away side.

Sports Mole has looked back over the clash to determine if the result was a fair one.

Match statistics:

Chelsea:

Possession 57%
Corners 7
Fouls 8

Was the result fair?

The home faithful will feel hard done by and they probably have a case. The game changed on the sending off of Benteke and from then on Chelsea were the dominant force. A draw would have been fair but if any team deserved to win, it was the visiting Blues.

Villa's performance

Had Benteke not been red carded, Villa could very well have got something from this match. They'd play well up until that point, but afterwards, it was almost as if they felt sorry for themselves. There was no longer the threat of their leading goalscorer and it showed. There was a bit of a rally in stoppage time, but it went without reward.

Chelsea's performance

They wobbled during the first half at times, particularly when the likes of Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor got at their defence. However, they actually played better when Ramires was sent off. David Luiz came on, which allowed Lampard to play further forward and look at the outcome. It was a very professional display in the end.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Frank Lampard: It's not even a contest really, is it? The 34-year-old won the match for his side today with two trademark goals. Not only that, but he was full of energy and put in numerous tackles. He's written himself into the Chelsea history books as well. Not a bad day for the England midfielder when all is said and done.

Biggest gaffe

Take your pick from either of the second yellow cards that the two players received who were already on bookings. Both Benteke and Ramires knew that they were on final warnings and yet they made silly, needless challenges.

Referee performance

To be fair to Lee Mason, he didn't get much wrong today. Both of the red cards were correct decisions and every yellow card he dished out was warranted. He was part of the reason why today's match was so entertaining.

What next?

Villa: On the final weekend of the season Villa make the trip to the DW Stadium to take on fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic.

Chelsea: The Blues will be David Moyes's last opponents as manager of Everton on the same day at Stamford Bridge.
