Eddie Newton hopeful of Chelsea stay

Eddie Newton says that he and Roberto Di Matteo have maximised their potential during their stint in charge of Chelsea.

Eddie Newton has said that he and Roberto Di Matteo will not be short of takers should Roman Abramovich not extend their stay at Stamford Bridge.

Di Matteo took control of the Blues in March following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas and was a given contract until the end of the season, hiring Newton as his assistant.

It is still unclear whether the Chelsea board will decide to keep the pair on, despite securing FA Cup and Champions League success.

Newton is still hopeful of staying at the West London club, but said that he and the Italian have shown other clubs what they are capable of during their tenure at Chelsea.

"My remit was to come in and help the side until the end of the season and that was it," Newton told Sky Sports News. "The club and me haven't changed in our thoughts. It was pleasure to come in and do that job and that's it. There is no other issue.

"Everyone knows that Chelsea is a football club close to my heart but, at the end of the day, the owner has to make his own decisions and whether he goes with Robbie and myself is another matter.

"If you are given an opportunity, you have to maximise it to the fullest potential. I feel Robbie and myself have done that. What will be, will be but we have got ourselves in a good light and hopefully something will come from it."

Newton and Di Matteo were teammates at Chelsea.
