Timo Werner: 'I deserved better from Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea'

Timo Werner - now at RB Leipzig - feels that he was unfairly treated by Thomas Tuchel during their time at Chelsea.

Timo Werner has suggested that Thomas Tuchel was 'quick to forget' the good moments that he enjoyed at Chelsea.

In 2020, the Blues edged out Liverpool to win the race for the forward, who penned a five-year contract upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

However, Werner's spell in West London was cut short after two years, the versatile attacker returning to RB Leipzig last summer.

While the general perception is that the Germany international failed to live up to his €50m price tag, Werner still contributed 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances.

The 26-year-old also played a key role as Chelsea won the 2021 Champions League, featuring for over 65 minutes in six of the seven knockout fixtures.

Nevertheless, Werner dropped down the pecking order upon the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and rarely played down the middle of the attack when the Belgian also fell out of favour.

Werner has now spoken to The Sun about the fallout of his return to Germany, suggesting that he felt unfairly treated by Tuchel as his game time became limited.

Werner said: "When you come from the kind of success I had in Germany or with Chelsea — playing nearly every game in the first season, winning the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, making a lot of goals.

"Then all this gets a little bit forgotten by the manager, it was not really fair. That was also a reason I had to move back to Leipzig, to get the enjoyment again.

"The biggest problem was he put a striker like Lukaku in front of me in the second season after I won the Champions League by nearly playing every game in the first squad. That was the toughest moment for me to get a player, a very good player, in front of me for 120 million euros.

"Romelu was a big striker and had to play after costing so much and I didn't feel honoured enough. Maybe that was also a reason why I had ups and downs."

Less than a month after Werner moved back to Leipzig, the Chelsea hierarchy decided to part ways with Tuchel, who only missed out on winning four pieces of silverware last season due to penalty-shootout defeats to Liverpool in the EFL Cup and FA Cup finals.

Werner has contributed a total of 11 goals and four assists from his 25 appearances in all competitions during 2022-23.
