Ian Wright: 'Former Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer had to go'

Ian Wright claims that Crystal Palace were right to sack former manager Frank de Boer, who was removed after just 77 days in charge.

Ian Wright has claimed that Crystal Palace made the correct decision to sack former boss Frank de Boer on Monday after just 77 days in South London.

The former Arsenal and Palace striker made the comments after De Boer was sacked after overseeing the worst start to a top-flight campaign in 93 years.

Wright believes that while it was a tough call to make after such a short tenure at Selhurst Park, Palace ultimately made the right one.

"Palace's co-owner and chairman (Steve Parish) is a hugely successful businessman and he's become so by making tough calls at the right time – and he clearly feels that time is now", Wright wrote in his column in The Sun.

"Obviously he will have been thinking about it but he slept on it, let the dust and disappointment settle a little and then decided it was the correct move."

The Dutchman was sacked after Palace's 1-0 loss to Burnley last weekend – a fourth defeat in a row without scoring a goal.

Wright continued: "I know De Boer has only been there for five minutes, but sometimes you have to accept that it isn't working out – and Steve clearly doesn't believe it is.

"Or, more importantly, he can't see things changing. Once it gets to that stage, there is only one outcome, as tough a call as it may be."

Former England boss Roy Hodgson is the favourite to take over at Selhurst Park as Palace prepare to host Southampton on Saturday.
