Patrick Vieira was full of praise for the character of his Crystal Palace side after they recorded a comeback 2-1 victory at West Ham United.

After the 3-0 defeat at Everton last month, the Eagles boss was not shy in criticising the performance of his players on Merseyside.

However, Palace have since responded with back-to-back wins over Southampton and West Ham, conceding just one goal in the process.

Palace went behind to an early Said Benrahma strike at the London Stadium but after a Wilfried Zaha equaliser soon afterwards, Michael Olise's scored a deflected winner in the closing seconds.

Four of Palace's five wins in the top flight during 2022-23 have now come after going behind, and they now sit in ninth position in the standings.

Although acknowledging that Palace remain very much a work in progress, Vieira praised the patience and discipline of his side as they posted their first away triumph of the campaign.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Frenchman said: "The feeling is good - not just winning the game but the performance from the start. We played with a lot of discipline and quality and moved the ball around. We're growing up as a team. We showed quality and resilience and managed to get back into the game and win it.

"We showed we have character and personality. We showed it again. Everyone wanted the ball, nobody was hiding. It would be good for us to take our chances.

"We still have a lot to improve. The game was really difficult. We still have a lot to learn. We didn't make the right decision in the final third and we weren't clinical enough to score chances.

"The aim is always to try to improve players individually and collectively. The league is really tight, really difficult. I believe the performance today will give us more belief and confidence."

Palace are next in action when they make the long trip to the North-East to square off against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup.

The London outfit then travel to the East Midlands to take on Nottingham Forest three days later, eyeing an opportunity to move into the top eight of the table.
