Jackie McNamara believes that Dundee United must at least match last season's sixth-placed finish in the Scottish Premier League if they are to progress.

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara has targeted a top-six finish in the Scottish Premier League next season.

McNamara, whose side finished sixth last season, said that the minimum aim should be to achieve the same spot in the league but ideally would want them to press on.

"First and foremost for me, I want to progress from last season," BBC Sport quotes McNamara as saying. "As a club, I thought we underachieved, especially at home.

"Our home results were very poor for the fan base we've got. Top six is a minimum for us. I want to take the club forward and try to be successful here."

Celtic won the league by 16 points from Motherwell last season.
