New boss McIntyre won’t accept shoddy Dundee defending

Jim McIntyre insists he will not stand for the mistakes which saw his first game as Dundee manager end in a 4-0 humiliation.

The new Dens Park boss warned the Ladbrokes Premiership basement boys about the threat Livingston posed from set-pieces.

But they failed to heed his advice as Gary Holt’s surprise package ran up another impressive 4-0 victory, with the Dark Blues cut apart by four deliveries.

Declan Gallagher, Craig Halkett, Steven Lawless and Alan Lithgow were all allowed to net as McIntrye’s men made basic defensive mistakes and the former Ross County boss was blunt as he said his new charges need to do better.

“In a nutshell we didn’t defend set-plays,” he said.

“We highlighted the Livingston strengths before the game. We showed them what a big threat they are from set-plays and told them we could not give away silly free-kicks because it is one of their major strengths.

“But equally, you need to stand up and be counted when it comes to man-to-man defending and we’ve not done that today.

“We’ve been punished four times, which is not good enough and we can’t accept that. I won’t accept that.

“It wasn’t as if we were done by really good play but it doesn’t matter. It’s the ugly side of the game we need to do better.”.

McIntyre has not given up hope of having Billy Dodds join his backroom staff but admits sealing a deal is proving difficult.

The former Dens Park striker’s standing among some supporters fell after he objected to the deal to take the club out of administration in 2011.

Dodds had been assistant manager to Gordon Chisholm before being sacked by administrators, who later confirmed the pair had voted against a successful Company Voluntary Arrangement.

McIntyre said: “It has been well documented that I would like to bring Billy in but that is proving difficult. It is a sensitive subject. We’ll wait on see and I have nothing to tell you at the moment.”

Livi move back up to fourth place with their fifth win from nine games.

They have scored 12 goals so far, with nine different players finding the net in the league to date.

Holt said: “That is something we work on. I would rather get goals from everyone.

“It is great if you have a 20-goal striker but those 20-goal strikers cost a hell of a lot of money so you have to share it about it and we are trying to do that.

“I’d rather have everyone chipping in with goals than just one guy and end up struggling.”
