Gary Cahill: "We should have won the game"

England defender Gary Cahill admits that his side should have beaten Slovakia in their final Euro 2016 group game.

England defender Gary Cahill has admitted that his side should have beaten Slovakia in their final Group B game at Euro 2016 this evening.

Manager Roy Hodgson made six changes to his side and watched them dominate the contest in Saint-Etienne, but they were unable to find a breakthrough as Slovakia held out for a goalless draw.

The result means that England finish second in Group B having also dropped points against Russia in their opening game, and Cahill admits that his side lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

"It was disappointing for us tonight. In the three games we have had the majority of the possession and today we have dominated play from start to finish and we couldn't unlock the door. It is disappointing for us. The rhythm was there, we had the ball constantly but just didn't have the cutting edge to open them up," he told ITV Sport.

"It needed something special in games like that and we nearly did but it just wasn't to be. We are disappointed, with the amount of possession we had we should have won the game. There is no point harking on about the first game.

"We have to move on, we are second in the group and have a huge game coming up. It gives us time to get back fresh. We tried to bring fresh legs in tonight and I thought we looked good and on another day we should win."

England will now face either Hungary, Iceland, Portugal or Austria in the last 16.
