England boss Roy Hodgson has rubbished suggestions that he was planning to substitute Wayne Rooney prior to scoring the winner in the 1-0 victory over Estonia.

Rooney curled home a 74th-minute free kick to spare the Three Lions' blushes, having played against 10 men for the majority of the second half following the dismissal of Ragnar Klavan.

Striker Rickie Lambert was stripped and ready for action prior to the goal, and Hodgson insists that the injured Danny Welbeck was the one that was going to be replaced.

"We were going to put Rickie Lambert on, but we were discussing which player would come off," he told ITV Sport.

"It was more likely to be Danny Welbeck, as Danny went over on his ankle and did come off in the end."

The victory helped England move three points clear of Slovenia at the summit of Group E in Euro 2016 qualifying.
