Wayne Rooney: 'England have to improve'

England captain Wayne Rooney admits that his side must improve on their performance against Norway if they are to get anything out of Monday's game against Switzerland.

England captain Wayne Rooney has acknowledged that the team must improve on their performance against Norway if they are to come away with anything from their Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday night.

The Three Lions ran out 1-0 victors in front of a record-low Wembley crowd in a dull and uninspiring friendly performance on Wednesday night, with Rooney scoring the winner from the penalty spot - one of just two shots on target England managed all night.

However, the Manchester United striker is confident that his side can learn from that match and continue their recovery from a dismal World Cup campaign in Brazil this summer.

"It is going to be a tough game, we know that, but we have to focus and work on things which we feel can expose them. We have to play better than against Norway to get a good result, and I am sure we will learn from that game," Rooney told reporters.

"It was important we came back after the World Cup to get that victory - but now the real business starts on Monday.

"The younger lads who were [at the World Cup] as well, they felt that, and it's not a nice feeling, so we have to try to make sure we don't feel like that again, and make sure we qualify for the Euros. If we get there, when we get there, then that [experience] will help us."

Rooney's strike against Norway put him fourth on the all-time England goalscoring list, just eight behind Sir Bobby Charlton's record tally of 49.
