Peter Shilton: 'England can take positives from Euro 2016 performances'

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton says that the Three Lions should try to take the positives from their results and performances at Euro 2016.

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has said that the Three Lions do not deserve some of the criticism that they have received for failing to finish in first position in Group B.

England's goalless draw with Slovakia secured their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2016 but their failure to turn possession into goals has resulted in Roy Hodgson's side having to settle for second spot behind Wales.

However, Shilton - who earned 125 caps for his country during his playing career - has insisted that England should not be too downbeat ahead of their last-16 fixture in Nice next Monday.

Shilton told BBC Radio 5 live: "I wouldn't go for all the criticism because England have controlled every game. We would like to top the group but now the tournament really starts.

"We have seen a lot of teams that haven't played well. Now let's hope we can take our chances. Let's not get too downbeat. There are plenty of positives."

England will face the runners-up from Group F, with Portugal, Hungary, Iceland and Austria all possible opponents.
